Ubuntu Beds
Ubuntu Beds is an initiative that aims to unite hospitality businesses that now stand empty, with our healthcare workers who are fighting the corona virus on the front lines.
Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has grown exponentially, and the risk to healthcare workers is real. In this time of need, we are committed to helping those who put their lives on the line for our community, in the spirit of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity." It is often translated as "I am because we are," or "humanity towards others," or in Xhosa, "umntu ngumntu ngabantu " it also means: "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity." Hospitals are geared for medical emergencies, and have jumped into action to provide a safe environment for their teams. However, a great risk for healthcare workers globally, is the commute to and from the hospitals after their shifts, and the fear of bringing the virus home to family and loved ones. In the spirit of Ubuntu, hostels, hotels, BnBs and guest-houses which have been hit by travel bans and lock-down will be able to offer safe harbour to our doctors and nurses. By ensuring that tired healthcare workers don’t need to travel long journeys home to their families, we can ensure the safety of more South Africans.
Lucky Lucy Foundation
Project18
Lucky Lucy Foundation is a non profit, pro life, pro quality of life, animal rescue organisation. They focus on sterilisation, as well as rescuing & rehabilitating these animals to become the perfect companion
Their other key focuses include: Education, Feeding and Social Responsibility & Upliftment for people in disadvantaged communities. This includes providing food & teaching skills such as growing vegetable gardens.
"We focus our strengths, first and foremost on getting as many animals sterilized as we possibly can (funds permitting), be it a dog in a township, on the street scavenging for food, or a dog with an owner who can’t afford private veterinary fees. We also help the disadvantaged communities who can barely afford food for themselves, let alone for their pets."
"We believe in uplifting communities by providing them with the tools and skills to sustain themselves. Hand outs will only treat the symptom and not the cause and we prefer to offer a more sustainable approach. By teaching skills such as growing vegetable gardens and woodwork we equip people with the ability to feed themselves which contributes not only to their self-worth but to a happier community. Lucky Lucy gives of their time and whatever provisions they can to make this a reality." - http://www.luckylucy.org/
Project18 supports animal shelters in and around Cape Town by donating and feeding thousands of hungry animals. These organisations dedicate their time and effort by caring for lost, neglected and abandoned animals.
Their community pledge is to raise the overall standards of animal welfare in and around our communities by providing advice, support and guidance to pet owners.
Recycle Swop Shop Dunoon
Durbanville Children's home
The Dunoon Recycle Swop Shop is an empowerment initiative whereby members of the Dunoon community are given the opportunity to help themselves by collecting recyclable items. They then exchange the bags of recycling at the Swop Shop for essential, personal and household items.
Their aim to meet the needs of the community by offering them a helping hand. By using recycblabek goods as a means of exchange, they're:
- Allow these individuals to provide for themselves and their families
- Igniting a belief that everyone can add value to their community
- Teaching the value of sustainability, recycling and the environment whilst cleaning up the community
Members of the community fill up bags of recyclable waste. These bags are brought to the swop shop and tokens are given our for each bag brought in. With these tokens, the people of the Dunoon community can purchase all sorts of necessary items such as clothing, toiletries, food and school essentials.
"The Durbanville Children’s Home fills the gap in service-provision for vulnerable children by using dedicated, professional services to support children in need of care and their families, with the ultimate aim of restoring them to a healthy family relationship."
"South Africa is living in a situation without precedent. Never before in history have so many children been without parental supervision.
Translating into high levels of domestic violence, substance and sexual abuse and neglect. In addition there are an estimated 3.7 million orphans, about half of whom have lost one or both parents to AIDS; and 150,000 children are believed to be living in child-headed households.
The South African reality is that millions of children are in need of support and care. One of the most pressing questions our country faces is how to provide a response that can be both loving and sufficiently large in scale." - https://durbanvillekinderhuis.org.za/
Rise Against Hunger Africa
"Rise Against Hunger Africa (RAH) is a volunteer based meal packaging and results oriented nutrition programme, which was started in South Africa in 2009. There are currently four full-time operations (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kwa-Zulu Natal and East London)."
"Our vision is an Africa without hunger. Our mission is transformation through education. Educating our donors, beneficiaries, volunteers and suppliers about the role they play in eradicating child hunger. Donated food is used to stimulate and encourage measurable results in Early Childhood Development centres. Our focus is on reaching the most vulnerable: hungry children, specifically those who attend pre-schools, or Early Childhood Development (ECDs). According to the University of Cape Town’s Children’s Institute, over 3 million children under the age of 17 are food insecure. RAH Africa offers a social investment opportunity to provide fully balanced meals for pre-school children necessary for their holistic development. We depend on passionate, active volunteers for meal packaging events and food distribution. Our Programme has solid, measurable results and restores hope for hungry children." - http://rahafrica.org/
